The First Tee of Essex County was built and opened at Weequahic Park in Newark in 2006.  Weequahic Park is an 18-hole golf facility which is part of the Essex County Parks System.  In order to conduct its educational programs at Weequahic, The First Tee constructed a unique junior learning facility on a former dump site.  This facility includes a limited-flight ball driving range, practice greens and a three-hole short course.

A pilot program in the summer of 2006 worked with several hundred Newark area youth, recruited from local youth organizations like Newark Youth Golf, Renaissance Golf, Boys and Girls Clubs of Newark and Newark Now.  With financial support from its partners – The First Tee of Metro NY, the NJSGA, the NJ Section of the PGA and the MGA Foundation – and the surrounding community, The First Tee of Essex County looks forward to its first full season of programming at Weequahic Park.
