In a three way tie for medalist, Ed Alden of High Bridge Hills, Tim Macken of Darlington, and Phil Ries of High Bridge Hills each shot a four-over par 76 to lead the field in the second of two sectional qualifying rounds for the 22nd NJSGA Mid-Amateur Championship today at the Raritan Valley Country Club in Bridgewater. Alden (36-40-76), Macken (39-37-76), and Ries (38-38-76), were among the sixteen golfers who qualified for the match play Championship, next Tuesday through Thursday, at the Somerset Hills Country Club in Bernardsville.

Raritan Valley Country Club, par 72 and played at 6700 yards, proved to be a most challenging test for some of New Jersey’s top amateur golfers over the age of thirty. Strong winds and cold temperatures were factors for the duration of the day, in this 18 hole, stroke play qualifying round. Today’s qualifiers will join defending Champion, Barry Wiseman of Royce Brook, plus 15 qualifiers from last Monday’s qualifying round at the Peddie Golf Course, in pursuit of the Gigi Carnevale Championship Trophy next week at Somerset Hills.
