Brian Komline, an amateur from Rolling Greens Golf Club, today shot an eight-under par 64 (32-32) to take the lead in the first round of the 85^th New Jersey State Golf Association / Lincoln-Mercury Open Championship at the Fairmount Country Club in Chatham. Komline’s impressive day in tying a club record included eight birdies and no bogeys. The 31 year old from Morris Plains will begin tomorrow’s play with a 2 shot lead over Mike Lanzetta of the Mansfield Driving Range and Learning Center, who shot a six under par 66. Defending Champion Ed Whitman of Knickerbocker currently stands at one over par after shooting a 73 (34-39) in today’s opening round. Fairmount, the par 72, 6790 yard layout, is playing host to its first NJSGA/Lincoln-Mercury Open Championship.

The Championship is a three day, 54 hole stroke play affair with a purse of $75,000. In addition to capturing the C.W. Badenhausen Championship Trophy, the low professional will take home the winner’s share of $15,000. Following the completion of 36 holes tomorrow, there will be a cut to the low 50 players and ties; this field will do battle in Thursday’s 18 hole Championship finale. Also of note, NJSGA Open Championship play has not seen an amateur winner since 1998, when Kenneth Macdonald bested Brian Gaffney in a sudden death playoff at Spring Lake Golf Club.
