Club presidents, managers and professional staff gather to address the nuances involved in attracting and maintaining club members in second annual Golf Summit at Forsgate C.C. on April 12.

Scotland Preston aced her final exam. After a grueling week of golf, the Governor Livingston High School senior answered the challenges posed by a determined opponent and a celebrated golf course architect to win the 86th edition of the New Jersey State Golf Association Women’s Amateur Championship. Preston, who plays out of Echo Lake Country Club, defeated close friend and rival Alexandra Hershberger from Twin Brooks Country Club, 4 and 3, in the championship match at Hackensack Golf Club on August 5th.

The NJSGA is embarking on its 112th year and there is no better time than now to be associated with the NJSGA whether as a member golfer, member club, volunteer, and/or part of...

February 1, 2012

The mild winter, following last year´s icy conditions, proved a boon to golfers who hit the courses in droves. So many golfers invaded the Galloping Hill Golf Course in Kenilworth, overseers shut it down in February to protect its fairways.

The Caddie Scholarship Foundation’s annual social event took place January 5th at the USGA Museum. Members of the Caddie Scholarship family, including twenty-eight current caddie scholars, came together for a few hours of networking, reflections, and tours of the USGA Golf Museum.

January 1, 2012

Every four years, the USGA and the R&A, the two bodies that govern the game of golf around the world, make revisions to the Rules of Golf. For 2012, the set of changes is more significant than usual and corrects some issues considered for a long time to need attention. The key changes attempt to better align breaches of certain Rules with their penalties.

2011

September 20, 2011

In a very competitive Senior Four Ball Championship at Beacon Hill Country Club on September 20th, the Metuchen Golf & Country Club team of Ron Vannelli and Steve Mauer edged out two other teams for the victory.

August 7, 2011

Allan Small of Fairmount Country Club added another significant achievement to one of New Jersey’s most impressive amateur golf records when he took home his third NJSGA Senior Amateur Championship August 2-3 at Bedens Brook Country Club. Small pulled away from the field with a sparkling four-under par 68 in the second round of the 36-hole stroke-play competition after he and Tom Hyland of Little Mill Country Club tied for the lead with 73s in the opening round.

August 1, 2011

Fourteen year-old Curren Mody, who plays out of Royce Brook Golf Club, wanted to see how his game would stack up against older kids. So, instead of entering the Boys’ division of the NJSGA/William Y. Dear Junior & Boys’ Championships, for which his age qualified him, he decided to “play up” in the Junior division. His goal was to qualify in the stroke play opening round and then win one match in the match play round. Goal met – and then some.

July 24, 2011

After sharing four NJSGA Father & Son victories with his father, Bob Housen now shares one with his son Chris. Together, the Manasquan River members won the 89th Father & Son Championship at Metedeconk National Golf Club on July 19th with a four under par round of 68 that featured four birdies and no blemishes on the scorecard. Second place was captured by the Tavistock team of Bob and Bobby Arthur with 71. Ryan and Billy Rose of Ridgewood Country Club followed in third place with 74.

July 14, 2011

The 91st NJSGA Open Championship was a coming out party for Kevin Foley. A decorated amateur and college player at Penn State, Foley turned pro just one year ago and was playing in his first State Open. He played like a veteran. In total control of his game and his emotions, Foley methodically carved out three rounds in the 60s at Hollywood Golf Club to win the Open by five strokes at 8-under par.

July 13, 2011

The State Open has a new leader. Kevin Foley, the 24 year-old PGA Apprentice Professional from Neshanic Valley Golf Course, added another 68 to his opening round 68 to move to six-under par and take a three-stroke lead into the final round of the championship on Thursday.

July 12, 2011

TRENTON, N.J. Cindy Ha of Valley Brook Golf Course emerged from a crowd at the top of the leaderboard to claim a one stroke victory over Hana Ku of Basking Ridge Country Club in the 57th NJSGA Junior Girls’ Championship July 11-12th at Trenton Country Club.

July 12, 2011

So close yet so far. For Jason Lamp, the head professional at Deal Golf & Country Club, the trip to Hollywood Golf Club is just a stroll across the street. But to fire an opening round six-under par 65 to lead the 91st Open Championship by three strokes, like he did today, must have seemed a world away. A recurring wrist injury that has required three different surgeries has severely curtailed Lamp’s competitive play over the last four years. In fact, aside from the 2007 State Open at Plainfield where the wrist caused him to withdraw in the second round, this is the only State Open in which he’s competed since winning it in 2006 – at Hollywood.

July 11, 2011

State Open week opened with some low scoring at the Youth Foundation Pro-Am at Hollywood Golf Club today. If your Pro-Am team wasn’t prepared to shoot in the 50s, you weren’t going to finish in the money. Leading the low scorers was the Trump National – Bedminster team consisting of P.G.A. Professional Craig Smith and amateurs Joe Curcio, Richard Levine and Frank Pfeffer, who shot 56 in the net best ball of four event.

July 6, 2011

WEST ORANGE, N.J. Although 20 year-old Kristina Wagner of Mattawang Golf Club came into today’s Women’s Public Links Championship at Francis Byrne Golf Course as the defending champion, she was not brimming with confidence. She sat out the competitive season at High Point University in North Carolina this year where she plays on the women’s golf team, so she wasn’t sure how her game would hold up under the pressure of a State competition. But hold up it did. She captured the title following a one-hole sudden death playoff against Jane Kuhfuss of Rolling Greens Golf Club.

July 3, 2011

Four qualifiers are in the books for the 91st NJSGA Open Championship and the starting field is set for this marquis event at Hollywood Golf Club sponsored by Lincoln and Prudential. A strong field of P.G.A. Professionals and the State’s top amateurs will tackle the difficult, 7,000 yard layout at Hollywood over three rounds of stroke play beginning July 12th. The field is comprised of 130 players, 82 Professionals and 48 amateurs. Brian Gaffney of Rumson Country Club will defend the title he worked so hard to win last year in the exciting playoff at Spring Brook Country Club.

June 14, 2011

David Sanders, a 20-year-old golfer from Laurel Creek Country Club, displayed maturity far beyond his years in winning the first New Jersey state competition he entered — the 110th NJSGA Amateur Championship contested June 7-9th at Trump National Golf Club–Bedminster.

June 8, 2011

BEDMINSTER, N.J. State Amateur first round leader David Sanders of Laurel Creek C.C. has some company now. After posting an opening round 69 (-3) yesterday on the New Course at Trump National Golf Club – Bedminster, Sanders shot 74 (+2) today and was joined at 143 (-1) for two rounds by Pat Wilson of Panther Valley G.&C.C. and the Little Mill C.C. duo of Mike Meisenzahl and Ben Smith. The leaders all have one thing in common: youth. All four co-leaders are between the ages of 20 and 24, which bodes well for the 36 holes that remain to be played on Thursday when temperatures are expected to approach 100 degrees. But experience will be a factor, too, as it always is, and two wily veterans lurk just two strokes behind at 145 – 2009 Amateur champion and four-time runner-up Michael Deo of Black Oak G.C., and 2008 Mid-Amateur champion Mike Stamberger of Spring Lake G.C.

June 2, 2011

With the 110th NJSGA Amateur Championship just days away, the field of 99 golfers has been determined and the event is shaping up to be an impressive championship. “We have a strong field with all of the usual big names plus a number of qualifiers who shot low scores at our qualifying sites,” said Mike McAneny, Tournament Director for the NJSGA.

May 6, 2011

Like last year when David Pierce of Neshanic Valley Golf Course broke through for his first NJSGA victory, the Mid-Amateur Championship produced another first-time winner this year. Kevin McSorley of Charleston Springs Golf Course won his first major event of any kind yesterday at Deal Golf & Country Club – and did so with an improbable defeat of Tom Gramigna of Tavistock Country Club in the championship match, 2 & 1.

April 27, 2011

COLTS NECK, N.J. Leading amateurs from the New Jersey State Golf Association and the Golf Association of Philadelphia participated in an historic event at Trump National Golf Club–Colts Neck today. NJSGA President John Murray called the occasion, the 50th playing of the Compher Cup matches, “a great tradition that fosters the best in championship competition and camaraderie.”

April 15, 2011

We’re close. Hang in there. The tide is turning and the warming trend will usher in spring. While we still can’t play golf in all parts of the state, we can get ready to play. The NJSGA has two great learning opportunities coming up in April. As a player, this is a great time of year to brush up on the Rules of Golf; and as a club employee, this is a great time of year for continuing education.

April 14, 2011

CLIFTON, N.J. The NJSGA hosted its inaugural Golf Summit today at Upper Montclair Country Club. Over 110 guests were on hand from member clubs and courses to participate in presentations on a number of issues relevant to the golf industry in New Jersey – and beyond.

April 1, 2011

The NJSGA is pleased to introduce a series of Member Golf Days this year that will allow NJSGA member golfers to play some of New Jersey’s finest courses. If you have not played in an NJSGA championship before or feel you don’t have the game to compete at that level, this is a great opportunity to tee it up at a premier New Jersey course under less competitive tournament conditions. The only eligibility requirements that you need to meet are belonging to an NJSGA member club/course as a male or female golfer over the age of 18 with an active Handicap Index of less than 30.0.

February 15, 2011

Do you know all of the relief options available from a lateral water hazard? Do you know what to do if your ball moves on the putting green or if you hit your ball while marking it? No doubt the Rules of Golf are voluminous and complex, but the NJSGA will help you parse through them at two Rules Seminars offered this spring. The first is scheduled for April 7th at the USGA’s Golf House and the second for April 13th at Spring Lake Golf Club.

January 5, 2011

What better time to reprise the NJSGA’s activities than the beginning of a new year. If you follow our championship schedule, read our magazine NJSGA GOLF, or periodically visit our web site, you hear and read a lot about our tournaments, players and member courses. But you may not know much about the organization itself. How is the NJSGA doing? What sorts of goals and priorities are we focused on for 2011? What do we do during the off-season?

2010

December 13, 2010

David Pierce won the 2010 Mid-Amateur Championship at Galloway National Golf Club and never looked back. It was the first tournament, and the first major, on the NJSGA’s schedule this year, and Pierce rode that auspicious beginning to the top of the Player of the Year standings.

October 20, 2010

FARMINGDALE, N.J. (October 19, 2010). The NJSGA’s season-ending event, the Tournament of Club Champions, crowned a repeat winner on the men’s side and a youthful winner on the women’s side. Played at Eagle Oaks Golf & Country Club on October 14th, the field is comprised of club champs from around the state who gather to determine the best of the best.

October 7, 2010

MONTCLAIR, N.J. Good things come to those who wait. For Brian Komline of High Bridge Hills Golf Club, the wait is over. With two NJSGA Open victories to his credit, a Four Ball title, a Men’s Public Links victory and Player of the Year awards in 2008 and 2007, the trophy that befits one of the top amateur golfers in New Jersey – the E.M. Wild Amateur Championship Trophy – is finally in his hands. Komline won this elusive title in a playoff today at Montclair Golf Club over a young college phenom named Pat Wilson in the most thrilling finish in recent Amateur history.

September 29, 2010

David Pierce is leading the NJSGA Player of the Year standings, but his lead is a narrow one. Brian Komline is nipping at his heels and Tom Gramigna is within striking distance. The race is essentially a three horse race to the finish line: Pierce with 667.5 points; Komline with 655 points; and Gramigna with 597.5 points.

September 16, 2010

ALPINE, N.J. In the 22 year history of the Senior Open Championship, hosted jointly by the NJSGA and the NJPGA, an amateur has never won. Until today. Jon Tingley of Stanton Ridge Golf & Country Club prevailed over a field of PGA Professionals and top senior amateurs to win his first major title at Alpine Country Club.

August 17, 2010

BERNARDSVILLE, N.J. (August 11, 2010). Like it was scripted, the championship match came down to the final putt on the final hole. When Michael Deo dropped a six footer for birdie on the 18th hole at Somerset Hills Country Club, he and Brian Komline capped a thrilling match against Domenic Gatto and Riley Powers with a 1-up victory in the 78th Four Ball Championship.

August 13, 2010

COLTS NECK, N.J. Tom DiCinti was new to handling the pressure of the final nine in a major championship, while Jay Blumenfeld and Allan Small had been in that situation countless times. Yet when the last putt dropped at the 52nd NJSGA Senior Amateur Championship, DiCinti emerged as the winner, one stroke ahead of Blumenfeld and three ahead of Small.

August 8, 2010

WAYNE, N.J. Fourteen year-old Kuriko Tsukiyama of Overpeck Golf Course made history yesterday. She became the youngest player to win the NJSGA Women’s Amateur Championship in the eighty-five year history of the event when she defeated five-time champion Sherry Herman of Hollywood Golf Club on the last hole of the championship match at North Jersey Country Club.

August 8, 2010

Montclair Golf Club is an enigma to many golfers. On paper, it looks ripe for scoring. In reality, that’s usually wishful thinking. Many locals call it the longest short course in the area. Others are perplexed by its greens. No doubt the hilly terrain and the acute greens combine to turn a 6,500 yard layout into a challenging test of golf.

August 4, 2010

DENVILLE, N.J.In the 89th playing of the William Y. Dear Junior and Boys’ Championships, one of the oldest junior tournaments in the country, first-time NJSGA competitors prevailed as champions. In the Junior division, which represents the 16-17 age category, Louis Kelly of Valleybrook Country Club defeated Ernie Renda of Fox Hollow Golf Club in the final match, 2&1. In the Boys’ division, for players 15 and under, Michael Pansini of Valley Brook Golf Course defeated Ryan Rose of Ridgewood Country Club, 1-up. Rockaway River Country Club was the venue for these championships on July 26-28th, when the heat wave finally broke and provided for three days of beautiful weather at this past State Amateur site.

July 27, 2010

MILLSTONE, N.J.The rest of the field was playing for second. After Eric LeFante opened with a six under par 66 in the 36-hole Men’s Public Links Championship at Charleston Spring’s South Course on July 22nd, it became clear early in the second round that no one would catch him. He bettered his first round score, shooting 64, and posted the lowest 36-hole score in the history of NJSGA competition at fourteen under par. In the process, he managed to win the Men’s Public Links Championship by eleven strokes and defend the title he won last year.

July 19, 2010

MORRISTOWN, N.J. When Brian Gaffney walked off the last hole at Spring Brook Country Club on July 16th a State Open champion, no one could say that he did not earn it. The 39 year-old Head Professional from Rumson Country Club has the talent, the experience, and an assortment of other victories to merit the stamp “Open Champion,” but the title simply had eluded him. He was leading the Open last year at Rock Spring Club when Brett Jones of Trump National – Bedminster eagled the par-5 14 hole, leapfrogging Gaffney from one stroke behind to one stroke ahead and eventually winning by two. He was close two years ago at Alpine when he entered the final day as co-leader but a disappointing round dropped him to a seventh place finish. And he was really close in 1998 at Spring Lake when amateur Ken Macdonald prevailed in a playoff.

July 16, 2010

MORRISTOWN, N.J. After multiple set-backs due to stormy weather this week, the 90th NJSGA Open Championship has finally reached the third and final round today at Spring Brook Country Club. With Brian Gaffney of Rumson Country Club and Frank Esposito of Brooklake Country Club jockeying for position during the first two rounds, Esposito (67-70 = 137) takes a one stroke lead over Gaffney (66-72 = 138) into the final round.

June 10, 2010

May 6, 2010

GALLOWAY, N.J. Perseverance was the name of the game at the 27th Mid-Amateur Championship played at Galloway National Golf Club from May 4-6th. Contestants not only had to battle each other in the match play format but had to battle a demanding golf course. As the course played progressively firmer each day with winds and a bright sun hardening it, it became clear that the golfer who controlled his ball the best would win. That man was David Pierce.

April 28, 2010

KING OF PRUSSIA, PA . In the annual spring faceoff of two regional golf associations, the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) defeated the NJSGA team, 11.5 points to 6.5, in the Compher Cup matches at Gulph Mills Golf Club.

March 26, 2010

KENILWORTH, N.J. The New Jersey State Golf Association today announced its Compher Cup team that will compete against the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) in the annual match between the two golf associations on Wednesday, April 28th at Gulph Mills Golf Club in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.

February 12, 2010

With much media attention swirling around the new “grooves rule,” we thought it would be helpful to review the rule and clarify how it will affect NJSGA competitions. The rule was announced in 2008 by the USGA and R&A, the worldwide governing bodies that set the Rules of Golf, but has become front and center news recently with the rule’s implementation and reactions by various Tour players.

January 7, 2010

It may be January and it may be frigid, but it’s not too early to turn our thoughts to golf – especially when the NJSGA is offering a great line-up of courses for its 2010 Championships. First, the majors. The season kicks off with the Mid-Amateur Championship at Galloway National Golf Club in early May. The Mid-Am returns to Galloway for the third time, a hospitable Jersey Shore location for early season golf. Multiple Mid-Am champions Allan Small and Tom Gramigna have won at Galloway, and Anthony Scelba is the defending champion this year.

2009

November 2, 2009

The NJSGA announced at the conclusion of the season that Jay Blumenfeld of Mountain Ridge Country Club and Michael Deo of High Bridge Hills Golf Club are co-winners of the 2009 Player of the Year award. The title goes to the amateur player (or players) who accumulate the most points for top finishes in a variety of tournaments during the course of the season. The NJSGA made the awards at the Celebration of Golf dinner at Crestmont Country Club on October 22.

October 19, 2009

The NJSGA convened its 110th Annual Meeting on October 8th at the Rock Spring Club. The meeting is a chance for the organization to review its activities and accomplishments from the past year, from Championships to committee work, and to elect new Board of Trustees members. This year’s meeting also was a passing of the baton from one Board President to another. Benjamin Del Vento, Sr. retires after completing his two-year term as President and will now serve as an Advisory Trustee. John B. Murray, a member of Spring Lake Golf Club and a partner in the Roseland-based law firm of Connell Foley, steps in as President.

September 16, 2009

SCOTCH PLAINS, N.J. It wasn’t easy, but Pete Busch got the Senior Open victory on his home turf that he very much wanted. After opening with a 68 yesterday on the par-71 Shackamaxon Golf & Country Club, Busch controlled his own destiny – especially with “home field” advantage. But his competition didn’t make it easy for him, and Bill Britton of Trump National – Colts Neck pushed Busch into a sudden-death playoff.

August 12, 2009

JACKSON, N.J. The NJSGA’s final major of the year concluded today at Metedeconk National Golf Club with first-time winners. The team of Keith Grant and Frank DeCraine from Neshanic Valley G.C. threw a slew of birdies at Merv Smith and Ron Cochran from High Mountain G.C. to defeat them in the final match of the 77th Four Ball Championship, 5 & 4. For Grant, 38, and DeCraine, 41, it’s their first win in an NJSGA event but they certainly played like they knew what they were doing.

August 4, 2009

Small expected to improve his score in the second round when the greens would be drier. “I putted horribly [in the first round],” he said. “I didn’t make anything, but I knew I was hitting the ball well. I played pretty solid today. Ron came by at the 10th hole to check on things and we were both even [par], so I knew I was right in it.”

July 30, 2009

ESSEX FELLS, N.J. The qualifying medalists at the 88th NJSGA Junior Championship and the 39th Boys’ Championship held true to form and marched on to win their respective championships at Essex Fells Country Club. Anthony Alex of North Jersey Country Club, who shot even-par 70 in the qualifying round to lead all Junior qualifiers, defeated Charlie Edler of Rumson Country Club 2&1 in the match play final. Similarly, Louis Bodine of Copper Hill Country Club, who shot 71 to capture medalist honors in the Boys’ division, edged Sean Lee of Neshanic Valley Golf Course 2&1 in that final.

ESSEX FELLS, N.J. (July 30, 2009).

July 20, 2009

LITTLE EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. In a tight race at the 87th Father and Son Championship, the team of David and Brian Leveille from New Jersey National prevailed over a strong field with a gross 70 on the par-72, 6,337 yard Sea Oaks Golf Club. The Leveille team edged out Tom and Danny McCreesh of Plainfield West on a match of cards.

July 16, 2009

WEST ORANGE, N.J. Brett Jones, the assistant golf professional at Trump National Golf Club – Bedminster, closed his round in style today to win the 89th NJSGA Open Championship at Rock Spring Club. Playing the final nine holes in three-under par, Jones catapulted himself from one stroke behind leader Brian Gaffney to two strokes ahead. The shot heard ‘round northern New Jersey was an eagle on the par-5 14th hole when Jones hit the green in two and ran in a twenty foot putt. He followed that with a birdie on 17 for the two-stroke lead and the eventual victory.

July 15, 2009

WEST ORANGE, N.J. It was moving day at the State Open today. In the second round of the 89th NJSGA Open Championship at Rock Spring Club, the Professional contingent re-asserted itself with a number of veteran players climbing atop the leader board. By virtue of a three-under par 67 to accompany an opening round 68, Brett Jones of Trump National – Bedminster (135) leads by one stroke over Chris Mazzuchetti of Colonia and Chris Dachisen of North Jersey (136).

July 8, 2009

When the 89th NJSGA Open Championship commences at Rock Spring Club on July 14th, one thing is clear: the winner will be under par. Depending on conditions and how firm and fast the course plays, it’s a question of how much under par. Baker Maddera, Rock Spring’s Head Professional, thinks the winning number will be 10-under par. “We’re probably not the longest course that’s out there for the State Open,” Maddera said, so speed of the greens and thickness of the rough will be key factors in determining how the field performs.

June 29, 2009

COLTS NECK, N.J. On a day that finally felt like summer, 53 women golfers gathered at Colts Neck Golf Club for the 6th Women’s Public Links Championship. In the single round stroke play event, Lauren Varnas of Pinch Brook G.C. bested the field by three strokes to win her first major State title. With a one-under par round of 70 on the 4,950 yard Colts Neck course, Varnas won over Karen Bouloucon of Crystal Springs and Hanna Ku of Neshanic Valley, who each shot two-over par 73.

June 5, 2009

CHATHAM, N.J. No one wanted to win this year’s Amateur Championship more than Michael Deo. After four runner-up finishes since 1997 and success in other NJSGA championships, such as the Mid-Amateur and Four-Ball, the big title was proving elusive. He knew he was playing well and he liked the way Fairmount Country Club set up for his style of play; he thought this could be his year.

June 3, 2009

CHATHAM, N.J. At the halfway point in the 108th NJSGA Amateur Championship at Fairmount Country Club, Anthony Campanile and Michael Deo sit atop the leader board tied at 143, a one-under par total after two rounds of play. Campanile, a college student from Blue Heron Pines G.C. who plays for Monmouth University, was the first round leader by virtue of an opening round 69; today he added a 74 on the par-72, 6,800 yard Fairmount layout. Deo, a 32 year-old NJSGA major championship winner and four-time runner-up at the State Am, opened with 71 yesterday and added a 72 today.

May 27, 2009

The honor roll of top players continues with a number of strong contenders, including those who finished in the top-ten of the 2008 NJSGA Player of the Year standings. Mike Stamberger of Spring Lake (2nd place), Jay Blumenfeld of Mountain Ridge (9th place), and Marc Issler of Woodlake (10th place) all figure to challenge for the Amateur. Current NJSGA Mid-Amateur champion Anthony Scelba, fresh off his match play win at Trump National – Colts Neck in early May, also possesses legitimate title hopes.

May 6, 2009

COLTS NECK, N.J. March came late to New Jersey this year. Facing three straight days of cold temperatures, gusty winds, and an on and off drizzle, 32 intrepid amateurs squared off in the 26th NJSGA Mid-Amateur Championship at Trump National Golf Club – Colts Neck this week. Left standing in this match play event was Anthony Scelba of Deer Run Golf Course, who with precision ball-striking and a never-say-die attitude outlasted his opponents to claim his first victory in an NJSGA event.

May 5, 2009

COLTS NECK, N.J.  Rain gear, layer upon layer of clothing, towels, umbrellas, gloves, and a hearty and patient attitude. These are the essential items for play in the 26th Mid-Amateur Championship at Trump National Golf Club - Colts Neck this week. After playing in identical wet and windy conditions for two days, Pete Barron of Stone Harbor G.C. and Anthony Scelba of Deer Run G.C. have emerged as the finalists for Wednesday´s championship match.

April 21, 2009

DEAL, N.J. Reversing its recent fortunes, the NJSGA team defeated the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) team today in the annual playing of the Compher Cup matches. The NJSGA team surged to a 13.5 - 4.5 point victory in the team and individual match play event held at Hollywood Golf Club, its first victory since 2004.

March 31, 2009

The New Jersey area golf community mourns the loss of Peter Famiano, the long-time, beloved head professional at Crestmont Country Club, who passed away on March 28 after a dignified battle with a very aggressive cancer. Pete was known throughout the golf community as “the consummate golf professional” who dedicated his life to bettering the game in every way possible.

2008

With his victory in the NJSGA Senior Amateur Championship at Crestmont Country Club in August, Allan Small of Fairmount Country Club became the first golfer in NJSGA history to win the NJSGA Amateur Championship, Mid-Amateur Championship and Senior Amateur Championship. “I am just honored to play in NJSGA events will all you guys,” Small said in accepting the championship trophy. Indeed, he has been on the competitive scene for a long time. He first won the Mid-Amateur in 1986 and again in 2006, and won the State Amateur in 2004 at Spring Brook. Completing the NJSGA “Amateur Slam” is a big accomplishment for the 56 year-old golfer, whose career has been plagued by lingering injuries.

DEMAREST, N.J. Mark McCormick, Head Professional at Suburban Golf Club, relied on steady drives and a solid putter to win the 88th NJSGA Open Championship today at Alpine Country Club. Perhaps a certain comfort factor with Tillinghast courses also helped. Combine a talent-rich field with a golf course that has not been in the championship limelight for a number of years, and it’s anyone’s call as to who will walk away with the C.W. Badenhausen Trophy at this year’s State Open Championship at Alpine Country Club. One thing is certain, however. The champion will possess a superb short game.

Site of the 88th NJSGA Open Championship.  Course Preview by Ed Brockner.

Perhaps no other figure in golf history has left a more indelible mark on the game in New Jersey than Albert Warren Tillinghast. The only son of a prosperous Philadelphia family, “Tilly” was born in 1874 and was an active participant in the game during its formative years. He made annual pilgrimages to the British Isles where he became acquainted with the legends of the game, including Old Tom Morris of St. Andrews. These experiences helped to inspire his interest in golf course design, eventually leading to his commission to design his first course for a family friend at Shawnee-on-Delaware in 1908.

MARLTON, N.J.Its name evokes innocence, but Little Mill Country Club was anything but innocent on the opening day of the 107th NJSGA Amateur Championship.  With months to prepare, the staff at Little Mill was determined to present a formidable test for New Jersey’s best amateur golfers this week.  They have delivered a course that plays firm and fast, and with a dose of wind thrown in today, Little Mill was a challenge which only a handful of golfers could tackle.

NJSGA Amateur Championship Preview

For the first time in 35 years, the NJSGA will play its Amateur Championship in South Jersey.  What distinguishes South Jersey from North Jersey is a question that has been debated by New Jerseyans for decades, and we won’t attempt to answer that here.  Suffice it to say that Little Mill Country Club, in Marlton, will host the field of 120 amateurs at next week’s 107th NJSGA Amateur Championship, June 3-5.

SPRING LAKE HEIGHTS, N.J. Michael Deo and Michael Stamberger were on a collision course to meet in the finals of the 25th Mid-Amateur Championship at Spring Lake Golf Club.  Both were playing well and winning most of their matches convincingly, sweeping through the quarterfinals and semifinals.  But in the final match it was Stamberger who continued to stay hot while Deo cooled off, resulting in a 5&3 victory for Stamberger in his first-ever Mid-Am appearance.

April 8, 2008

Spring Lake Golf Club, site of the 25th NJSGA Mid-Amateur Championship from May 5-7, has been lengthened since the State Open was played there in 1998 – but it still totals only 6,535 yards from the championship tees.  That said, competitors in the Mid-Am should not expect an easy test when they get there.  Narrow fairways and small greens with lots of trouble behind them compensate effectively for the lack of yardage.  “The course plays quick,” recalls Michael Deo of Montclair Golf Club, the defending champion.  “The greens are usually fast.  You have to be an accurate ball striker.  It’s certainly not wide open by any means, and you can get in trouble very easily there.  If you keep it in the fairway, you have the potential for a decent score.”

The New Jersey competitive golf season came to an official close on October 20th with the Celebration of Golf awards dinner. The trio of Cindy Ha, Scotland Preston and Kuriko Tsukiyama finished seventh at the USGA’s Women’s State Team Championship played at The Landings Club in Savannah, GA earlier this month.

It was a tale of two different days, the first a perfect fall day for golf, the second a battle of the elements. Through it all, Bill Britton of Trump National – Colts Neck maintained the steadiest play in the field on his way to winning his first NJSGA/NJPGA Senior Open Championship on October 12th. With both rounds under par and a total score of 139 (69-70), 3-under par on the par 71 Maplewood Country Club course, Britton ended up cruising to a four stroke victory.

Susan DeKalb of Bamm Hollow Country Club rallied on the second nine of the second round to move past first-round leader Mary Eichhorn of Spring Lake Golf Club and earn the 42nd NJSGA Women’s Senior Amateur Championship October 3-4 at Deal Golf & Country Club.

Cyrus Whitney of Hackensack Golf Club, who stood bunched among seven players at the top of the leader board in the first round of the 53rd NJSGA Pre-Senior Championship, was the only one of the seven who could improve his score in the second round. Following his 75 with a 74 turned out to be just enough to claim the championship. Whitney’s five-over-par 149 on August 22-23 at Navesink Country Club in Middletown prevailed over Phil Fabrizio of Knickerbocker and Marc Weinshel of Fox Hollow by a stroke.

Although Anthony Aloi of Mercer Oaks was the headline player in the two-man team as the reigning NJSGA and MGA Public Links titleholder, it was his unheralded partner, Michael DiMeglio, who pulled off the shot that secured the 79th NJSGA Four-Ball Championship on August 10th at Knickerbocker Country Club in Tenafly.
