Artiglieres Of Mount Tabor Win Father & Son Championship At N.J. National G.C.
Mike and Lucas Artigliere of Mount Tabor Country Club shot a round of even-par 72 to win the 96th NJSGA Father and Son Championship on Wednesday, July 18, at New Jersey National Golf Club in Basking Ridge.
The annual Father and Son Championship is presented by McRae Capital Management.
The Artiglieres won the title by two strokes over Richard and Connor Snow of Glen Ridge Country Club. Tied for third at 3-over-par 75 were Frank and Jay Anastasio of Trump National Golf Club in Colts Neck and Stephen and Brian Boyd of Baltusrol Golf Club.
Mark and Matt Samuels of Fox Hollow Golf Club won the net division with a score of 77-12-65.
“We have played in this tournament every year since 2014 and we felt if we were going to win, this would be the year,” said Mike Artigliere, 50, who carries a handicap index of five. “We are former members of New Jersey National, so we have knowledge of this golf course. And the fact that I’m playing better and able to keep it in play definitely helped us.”
Lucas Artigilere, 18, as a member of the Madison High School golf team, won the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association Group 2 individual championship in May by shooting an even-par 72 in the Tournament of Champions at Hopewell Valley Golf Club in Hopewell. His effort also led Madison to the Group 2 team championship this year.
Lucas has won the past two club championships at Mount Tabor, and in2016 was the youngest ever to do so, at age 16.He will play golf next year at Drew University in Madison under Maura Ballard, the former Rutgers University coach.
“We had a good feeling about the course. The greens were great and rolling true. The course was in great shape,” said Mike Artigliere.
The card for the Artiglieres included three birdies and three bogeys.The initial birdie came on the par-5 second hole when a sand wedge shot by Lucas Artigiliere from 110 yards ended 10 feet from the cup. From there, his father drained the putt.
Mike Artigliere hit his tee shot to within three feet to set up a birdie on the par-3 No. 7.
Four holes later, Lucas Artigliere’s tee shot came within six feet of the hole to set up another birdie.
“Congratulations to all the participants and thanks to everyone who helped make this is such a special event, particularly our staff and volunteers, without whom we could not have conducted this tournament,” said NJSGA president Bill Frese.
Frese also thanked McRae Capital Management, the long-time sponsor of the Father and Son Championship, and the McRae family, describing them as “One of the most prominent families in New Jersey golf.”
