NJSGA Permits Distance Measuring Devices

NJSGA Permits Distance Measuring Devices

The Tournament Committee of the NJSGA has voted to permit the use of electronic distance measuring devices at all NJSGA Championships in 2008. Competitors will be allowed to use devices for which the sole purpose is determining distance; any device which gauges other elements, such as gradient, wind speed, temperature, altitude, etc., is not permitted.

By definition, distance measuring devices are considered equipment that may be carried and used by a player and his/her caddie. Furthermore, distance is considered public information and may be shared among fellow competitors, opponents and their caddies without being deemed "advice." However, as per Decision 14-3/0.5 (USGA Decisions on the Rules of Golf), a device which has functionality in addition to distance measuring is not permitted, whether such functionality is used or not. Thus, competitors are advised that devices which measure distance only are the only types of measuring devices permitted at NJSGA Championships.

The NJSGA joins other regional golf associations, such as the MGA, Westchester and Long Island, in permitting distance measuring devices in 2008. The decision to adopt this Local Rule will be reviewed by the Tournament Committee on an annual basis.
