Samantha Perrotta Shares Medal At U.S. Women's Mid-am Qualifier

Samantha Perrotta, who plays out of Old York at Chesterfield and won the 2013 NJSGA Women’s Public Links Championship,, is coming off an outstanding 2015 season in which she dominated the Women’s Golf Association of Philadelphia, winning two major awards.

On Tuesday, August 9, Perrotta shot 75 and was one of three to share medalist honors at a U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur qualifier for women ages 25 and above at Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield.

The low nine players in the field of 27 advanced to the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur at Kahkwa Club in Erie, Pa., Sept. 10-15.

Also shooting three-over-par 75 were Leeann Lewis of Great River, N.Y., and Patti Hogeboom of Kingston, Ontario.

Also qualifying from New Jersey were Katie Renoff of Glen Ridge at 79 and Donna Young of Ewing at 80.

Last year, Perrotta, who lives in Florence, won WGAP’s Margaret Crozer Fox Cup and the Silver Cross on the strength of her winning several one-day events.

In 2015, she qualified for the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur and reached match-play Last fall, she made it thought Q-School for the Symetra Tour and so far has played in one Symetra Tour event, in Albany, N.Y.

Perrotta, 28, missed by one shot of qualifying for the LPGA ShopRite Classic at Seaview Resort.

“I straightened out my driver today. I’m not fighting the driver any longer and I was squaring it up. I always did pretty well with my irons and wedges,” she said.

Lewis, 53, said she has played in 20 USGA events, about half of them in the U.S. Mid-Amateur. Roughly a decade ago, she lost to standout Caorl Semple Thompson in 16 holes, but her proudest moment was rallying from a six-hole deficit with eight to play to square the final match before losing in a playoff in the Bermuda Cup.

“I’m thrilled with what I did today because I haven’t been playing well the past couple years,” said Lewis, who last summer visited Nepal and reached base camp at Mount Everest (17,000 feet) on the 29,000-foot peak.

She has played in several U.S. Amateurs and represented New York three times in the U.S. State Team Championship.

Hogeboom, 32, will be playing in her fifth U.S. Mid-Amateur. She made the Round f 32 in 2012 and made match play in all four previous appearances. In 2010, the graduate of Augusta State (Ga.) was T-4 in stroke-play at the event. She won the Ontario Mid-Am in 2010.

“This was a fantastic golf course. It was very fair. You had to stay focused, especially on the greens,” Hogeboom said.
