11th Annual East Coast Evans Scholars Classic Scheduled For June 24th

East Coast Evans Scholars Classic

The 11th annual East Coast Evans Scholars Classic is scheduled for Monday, June 24 at Hawk Pointe Golf Club in Washington, N.J.

By participating in the event, which includes lunch, golf and dinner and an awards program, golfers are helping to send deserving caddies to college on an Evans Scholarship.

More than 100 Evans Scholars Alumni and friends of the Program attended the 2012 event, helping to raise nearly $60,000 for the Evans Scholars Foundation. Since the event began in 2003, it has raised $315,000.

The Western Golf Association partners with the New Jersey State Golf Association to help fund scholarships for deserving candidates from New Jersey. This partnership was the culmination of the NJSGA past-President Tom Paluck’s initiative. Paluck, an Evans Scholar at Michigan State University Class of 1962, started the Classic with the goal of sharing his success so that New Jersey caddies might get the same academic opportunity that the Evans Foundation extended to him years ago.

This year’s New Scholar, Tommy Marcus, from Tenafly, N.J., will head to the University of Michigan this fall. He plans to study finance. A current senior at Dwight-Englewood School and caddie at Knickerbocker Country Club, Marcus is a big sports fan and golfer. He is in a leadership position with a group called Help the Special Olympics Club and he also volunteers with Special Olympics.

“Caddying has been more than just a summer job for me; through my work, I have been able to prepare for a future where motivation and performance is critical,” he writes in his application essay. “My commitment towards taking my job seriously has given me a new passion, a better work ethic, increased patience, improved inter-personal skills, and an appreciation for the hard-earned dollar.”

Another Evans Scholar, Sean Thornton who caddied at Green Brook Country Club, recently graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in computer engineering.

The East Coast Evans Scholars Classic began when a group of Evans Scholars Alumni connected in an effort to give back to the Program. Proceeds benefit the Evans Scholars Foundation, which oversees the nation’s largest privately funded college scholarship program.

Each year, more than 200 new Evans Scholarships awarded to deserving high school students; there are more than 800 Evans Scholars at 19 schools across the country. Visit www.wgaesf.org for more information. Register here.
