Bergen Catholic Coach Jim Jacobsen Records 1,000th Career Victory

On Friday, April 23, with friends, family and former players on hand at the Upper Montclair Country Club, his 34th Bergen Catholic team presented coach Jim Jacobsen with his 1,000th victory. With wins over St. Joseph (Montvale) and Paramus Catholic, his win total actually hit 1,001.

The Crusaders made it even more special by shooting an Upper Montclair, East Course record 146.

The only other coach in state history with more than 1,000 wins in any sport is Hurley, the legendary boys basketball coach at St. Anthony in Jersey City, whose record is 1,162-119 with 28 state group titles and counting.

"Winning 1,000 is more of a relief than anything else,'' said Jacobsen, who also happens to be a member at Upper Montclair. "I finished last year with 984 and people kept asking me about 1,000 ever since then, so it's been a monkey on my back. The emphasis should really be on the kids, so I'm glad it's over, I'm glad it's out of the way and we can get back to golf because there's a lot left to the season.''

The man's numbers are staggering -- 1,001 wins, 33 losses and one tie. Ten unbeaten seasons, nine NJSIAA State Championship/Tournament of Champions titles, a state record 130 straight wins in the 1990's, 39 invitational championships and the list of accomplishments literally go on and on.
