First NJSGA Major Championship; 90th Four Ball Championship set for May 16-18 at Deal G&CC

DEAL, N.J. –  The New Jersey State Golf Association is headed to Deal Golf & Country Club from May 16-18 for the 90th New Jersey Four-Ball Championship. 42 teams will compete for the Ridgewood Country Club Trophy on the par 71, 6,365-yard course. 

Inside the Field
Several past winners are in the 2022 field, including the Rumson Country Club contingent of Chuck Anttonen and Morten Gotterup (2020), Kevin Campana and Ryan MacDonald (2019), Brendan Hansen of Spring Lake Golf Club and Randall Lazzaro of Trump National Colts Neck (2018) and Gregg Angelillo, 2007 champion is paired with a new partner in Brandon Dalinka, who won the 2019 New Jersey Mid-Amateur Championship.

Also featured in the highly competitive field is 2021 New Jersey Amateur Champion, Michael Brown, competing alongside partner Peter Barron, the 2017 New Jersey Mid-Amateur Champion. 2016 New Jersey Public Links Champion, Robert McHugh is also in the field, partnered with Michael McHugh.

The Course
The striking Deal Golf & Country Club is a Donald Ross design and is well known for its tight fairways, challenging bunking and demanding greens. Founded in 1898, Deal G&CC features a primarily flat course with critical tee shots and uniquely contoured putting surfaces. 

Vic Ghezzi, a member of the inaugural NJSGA Hall of Fame class in 2018, served as golf professional at Deal from 1935 through 1941. In 1941, Ghezzi beat Byron Nelson on the 38th hole to win the PGA Championship at Cherry Hills C.C. in Colorado. He won 11 times on the PGA Tour, three New Jersey State Opens (1937, ’43, ’44) and two New Jersey PGA Championships (1939, ’49).

Deal has hosted 12 NJSGA championships and most notably, five NJSGA major championships and most recently, the 2011 New Jersey Mid-Amateur Championship, won by Kevin McSorley of Charleston Springs.

The Format
One, 18-Hole, stroke play qualifying round will be played on Monday, May 16; the low 16 teams will advance to two days of Four-Ball match play on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 17-18.
