Galloping Hill, Montammy, Upper Montclair Hosting NJSGA Majors In 2016


Montammy Golf Club hosting the 115th State Amateur, Galloping Hill Golf Course the 96th State Open, and Upper Montclair Country Club the 91st Women’s Amateur are among the highlights of the 2016 New Jersey State Golf Association championship schedule.

Also, the NJSGA announced the 33rd State Mid-Amateur, which last took place in September, has been repositioned to the Spring of 2016, May 11-13, at Spring Lake Golf Club.

Montammy, located in Alpine, is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016 and hosting its first NJSGA major championship. In 2012, Montammy successfully played host to the NJSGA/NJPGA Senior Open.

The State Amateur will take place June 7-9 at Montammy.

Galloping Hill, located in Kenilworth and the home of the NJSGA, has the distinction of being the first public golf course to host the State Open, which it will do July 11-13. In 2013, Galloping Hill hosted the State Men’s Public Links Championship and this past summer hosted a State Open qualifier won by Tyler Hall of Upper Montclair, who went on to win the State Open.

Upper Montclair in Clifton has been a long-time supporter of women’s professional golf, dating back to 1979 when it hosted the LPGA Coca-Cola Classic won by Hall-of-Famer Nancy Lopez. Since then, it has hosted six other LPGA events, including the Chrysler-Plymouth Classic and the Sybase Classic.

Next year will be the first Upper Montclair will play host to the State Women’s Amateur. The Third Women’s Mid-Amateur will be played there,July 25-26, concurrently with the Women’s Amateur.

“We’re excited about the venues for 2016,” said Mike McAneny, NJSGA Director of Tournaments and Media Relations. “We think they will present a wonderful playing experience and provide great tests of golf.

“Montammy is an exceptional championship golf course. Galloping Hill is special. In addition to hosting the Open Championship, it provides other special opportunities for local youth and charitable organizations. We’ll be able to expand the community outreach and engage the general public by having it there.

“Upper Montclair is a premier venue. Besides hosting the LPGA events over the years, it has hosted many other tournaments, including regional and state events,” McAneny added.

Other championships announced for 2016 include the Fourth Women’s Four-Ball, May 25 at Trump National in Colts Neck; the 13th Women’s Public Links, July 5 at Knoll West in Parsippany; the 95th Junior and 46th Boys, July 25-27 at Essex Fells; the 12th Men’s Public Links, July 20 at Mercer Oaks in West Windsor.

Also, 58th Senior and Sixth Super Senior (Men’s), August 2-3 at Shackamaxon in Scotch Plains, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary; the 94th Father and Son, August 4 at Maplewood; the 84th Four-Ball, August 9-11 at North Jersey in Wayne; the 58th Pre-Senior (Men’s), Sept. 20-21 at New Jersey National in Basking Ridge, and the 47th Women’s Senior, Sept. 27-28 at Rockaway River in Denville.

The three NJSGA team events have also been announced: The Compher Cup April 27 at Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne, Pa.; the Stoddard Trophy, August 1 at Century C.C. in Purchase, N.Y., and the Senior Challenge Match, October 8 at Lehigh Country Club in Allentown, Pa.
