Greate Bay Country Club to host 4th South Jersey Cup

Greate Bay Country Club to host 4th South Jersey Cup

AUGUST 18, 2022 - The the 4th South Jersey Cup will be held on Wednesday, September 28 at Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point, N.J. This 18-hole, stroke play competition for both women and men features a new venue for 2022, moving to Greate Bay from nearby Atlantic City Country Club where the event has been held since its inception in 2019. As usual, the South Jersey Cup is one of the NJSGA’s most anticipated late season events and the field is expected to fill quickly.

Greate Bay is one of the area’s top private clubs and is enjoying a renaissance after it was purchased by new owners in 2021. It features a full clubhouse and banquet facility, practice range and fitness center. Its location just off the Garden State Parkway makes for easy travel, especially to the hotels and entertainment areas of Atlantic City which are 20-30 minutes from the club.

The golf course has the unique distinction of having design elements of three of the top architects of the 20th century, albeit from different eras. Originally designed by World Golf Hall of Famer Willie Park Jr., Greate Bay opened in 1923 and was first known as Ocean City Country Club. Nearly fifty years later, George and Tom Fazio were hired to redesign the course and construct a practice range when homes were built on the periphery of the golf course. In the early 1980s, the Sands Casino purchased the club and it became a destination for many stars of the day, including Cher, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand who all visited the club. It was also the host venue for the LPGA ShopRite Classic in 1988 and 1997.

The South Jersey Cup consists of divisions for both women and men. In the women’s competition, there will be both gross and net scoring. For the men’s competition, there will be gross scoring with a Mid-Amateur flight (age 25+) and Senior flight (age 55+), in addition to the overall tournament.

Play will begin with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start; the entry fee is $170 which includes golf, lunch, cart, and range fee. The maximum handicap limit for the women is 35.0; The maximum handicap limit for the men’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur divisions is 10.0, and 15.0 for the men’s Senior division.
