Metedeconk Nationalto Host Compher Cup On April 27

While the New Jersey State Golf Association will not be hosting the annual Compher Cup event against the Golf Association of Philadelphia, the matches will be played in New Jersey.

Esteemed Metedeconk National Golf Club in Jackson, N.J., which has allegiances to both organizations, has been selected by the GAP to be host club for the 55th Compher Cup matches on Wednesday, April 27.

GAP leads the series which began in 1962, 35-13-5. In 2015, at Bayonne Golf Club, the team battled to a 9-9 draw, but GAP retained the Compher Cup due to its 9-1/2-8-1/2 victory at Aronimink in 2014.. The Compher Cup began in 1962 with the NJSGA winning at Hollywood G.C. in Deal. The 2005 event was canceled due to weather.

The squads compete annually as 12-man teams. In Compher Cup play, all 12 players from each side square off in individual matches and simultaneously in four-ball matches for a total of 18 points at stake.

“We are one of the few clubs centrally located amongst the NJSGA and the GAP; ideally situated between Philadelphia and most of the Northern New Jersey Clubs. Metedeconk is a championship golf course which sets up perfectly for this type of match play competition,” said Brent Studer, Director of Golf at Metedeconk.

“It should be a very exciting golf tournament because Metedeconk has so many difficult and intimidating golf shots. Players are going to have to pay attention to the risk-reward features of this Robert Trent Jones design, and the more experienced golfers should have an edge,” Studer added

Last year, Metedeconk hosted the NJSGA’s inaugural Ultimate Team Event, featuring two-man teams from clubs throughout the state.

“Hosting the Compher Cup for the first time is very prestigious, ”Studer said.
