NJSGA, GAP set for 61st Compher Cup Match at Mountain Ridge

Meet the NJSGA Team

Last season, the GAP defeated the NJSGA, 10.5-7.5 at Tavistock Country Club in Haddonfield. Overall, GAP leads the all-time series 40–14–5. The NJSGA seeks its first victory since 2021, when the NJSGA routed the GAP, 11-7 at Somerset Hills Country Club.

For the competition, each association fields a team of 12 of its top amateur golfers who compete in simultaneous Four-Ball (team) and individual matches. Each match is worth one point; a total of 18 points are at stake. Any match which ends in a tie results in a half-point awarded to each side. The team with the greatest number of points wins, and if the match is tied, the Cup remains with the defending champions.

The Compher Cup was held for the first time in 1962 and is named for former NJSGA president, Frederic Compher, who donated the championship cup and conceived the idea of an interdistrict match with GAP to foster camaraderie and friendly competition between the associations. It has been held every year since, except for 2020 due to the pandemic (COVID-19).

Jay Blumenfeld will serve as honorary captain for the 2023 NJSGA squad. Blumenfeld, 71, is a multi NJSGA champion, winning the Senior Amateur Championship twice, the Super-Senior Championship twice and a long-time contender in many State Amateur Championships.
