NJSGA Seeks Stoddard Trophy Repeat on Thursday: Live Scoring
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The 96th Stoddard Trophy Match will take place Thursday, June 30 at the Country Club of Fairfield, hosted by the Westchester Golf Association. This one-day triangular match play event between the New Jersey State Golf Association, Westchester Golf Association, and Long Island Golf Association features six alternate-shot, two-player team matches in the morning and 12 singles contests in the afternoon. The 12-player NJSGA team, champions of the John Hutchinson Stoddard Trophy at Hackensack Golf Club in 2021, look to retain the hardware.
The event began in 1922 at Morris County Golf Club and was won by the Westchester Golf Association. The NJSGA won for the first time the following year at Lido Country Club, the first of its series-leading 43 victories. Both the WGA and LIGA have won the trophy 24 times, and the trophy has been shared by way of a tie four times.
In 2021, the NJSGA defeated the WGA and LIGA, 21.5-to-19.0-to-13.5. The tandem of Doug Ergood and Troy Vannucci led the way for the Garden State, picking up wins against Long Island and West Chester in the morning format of alternate shot. After the morning foursome matches, WGA paced the field by three points. In the afternoon, Ergood, Vannucci, Jack Wall, Jay Blumenfeld and Max O’Hagan swept their singles matches to clinch the victory for the NJSGA.
The NJSGA looks to win the competition for the fifth time in six years after victories in 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2021. The Stoddard Trophy matches were not played in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
