"This means the world to me," said Rose, 17, a senior-to-be at Bergen Catholic High School who defeated Tobias Ryan of Rumson in the morning semifinal, 3 and 2. "It tells me all my hard work has paid off. It´s the biggest thing for me since I won the Ridgewood club championship.
"To win such an historic event, with golfers like Morgan Hoffman on the trophy, is very important to me," said Rose, a Ho-Ho-Kus resident who was runner-up in the Boys division in 2010.
"I just tried to stay on an even keel the whole time. I never got too happy or too mad. I wanted to stay in the zone and when I hit good shots, I didn´t let the adrenaline get to me," said Rose, who doubles as a placekicker on Bergen Catholic´s football team.
The Rose-Schuman match went back and forth with Schuman getting all square with a par for victory on the par-4 13th hole.
But Rose got the hole back with a birdie victory on the par-3 14th hole to go 1-up. Rose went 2-up with a birdie on the par-4 16th hole when his approach landed 10 feet below the flagstick.
He wrapped up the victory with a par for a halve on the 17th hole.
"The pivotal hole was No. 14. It was a big turnaround for me, because Keith had gained momentum with his victory on the 13th hole," added Rose.
Schuman, who resides in Upper Saddle River, will attend Boston College in the fall as a member of the ski team. He was a nationally ranked skier for the Stratton Mountain School in Vermont.
"I hit the ball well for the most part. We both played well today. I had no aspirations coming in here, but when I shot a 71 in qualifying, I felt I could do well this week," said Schuman, who ousted last year´s Boys champion, Thomas LaMorte of White Beeches in the semifinal, 19 holes.
Newhouse, 15, the 12th seed, will be a sophomore at New York´s Collegiate School. He lost in the quarterfinals in 2011 to eventual champion LaMorte. He beat Luke Wolklin of Stanton Ridge in the semifinal, 3 and 2.
"I wouldn´t let myself get complacent. Last year I was up two or three holes against LaMorte at the turn and it got away from me," he said. "I just want to keep getting better and see where it takes me. I want to thank the NJSGA. It was the most fun event I´ve ever played in."
His par triumph at the par-4 16th hole, when his shot out of the bunker landed four feet from the cup, turned the tide for him.
"This was the first time I qualified in three years," said sixth-seeded Matti, a sophomore-to-be at St. Peter´s Prep who lives in Union. "All in all, it was a very good week for me."

In the semifinals, Matti defeated Justin Murray of Ramblewood, 5 and 3.
