A sold-out field of 112 golfers was treated to perfect weather and excellent amenities for the NJSGA Member Golf Day on May 30 at Roxiticus Golf Club in Mendham.

“I played here in the Member Golf Day two years ago and made the only hole-in-one of my life on No. 9,” said Daniel Roh of Bergen County, who was paired with Deoch Suh. “The course plays fair and is challenging. It provides a very good venue for a Member Golf Day.”

Kenny Mack, a former basketball player at St. Peter’s College, and buddy Bill Hanley are both teachers at Union Hill Middle School in Union City in Hudson County.

“This is our third Member Golf Day in two years. We have played Hidden Creek and TheRidge at Back Brook,” said Mack, who played in the NCAA Tournament with St. Peter’s in 1991. “Member Golf Days are a wonderful idea. They give you access and the opportunity to see new courses. The events arecompetitive and the value is really good.”

The MGD at Roxiticus was the second of the season. A total of 13 MGDs will take place throughout the summer, concluding with Hollywood Golf Clubin Deal on Oct. 16.

“This is the eighth year of Member Golf Days, and this is one of the best schedule we’ve ever put together,” said NJSGA Director of Handicapping and Member Benefit Services, Rich Kennedy. “There is a lot of enthusiasm for the events and we expect many sellouts this year.”

Registration opened on June 1 for MGDs at The Ridge at Back Brook (July 16), Suburban Golf Club(July 31), Black Oak Golf Club (Aug. 6) and Stanton Ridge Golf & Country Club(Aug. 7).

“I like quality golf over quantity golf,” said Cynthia Wikander, who found out about MGDs through NJSGA E-Bulletins.

Her playing partner, Wanda French-Brown had played Roxiticus on April 25 as part of a WMGA match-play event.

“It’s a fun and challenging course. I wanted to come back and this time, play with little or no pressure,” she said.

Tyrone Parker and Jason Babula, co-workers at Chubb, hope to take part in MGDs at TheRidge at Back Brook, Black Oak, Stanton Ridge and Cobblestone Creek Country Club(Sept. 25).

Craig Tyler of Summit is involved in the GolfChannel Amateur Tour and World Golf Amateur Tour. He was traveling to Ocean City, Md., for an event this weekend.

“I got involved in Member Golf Days thanks to my friend, Rich Zoon. We’ve been playing in them for three years. They are an awesome deal and a great chance to play very nice courses,” Tyler said.
