Top NJ, Long Island & Westchester Amateurs vie for Stoddard Trophy at Apawamis

Twelve-man teams representing the NJSGA, the Westchester Golf Association and the Long Island Golf Association will gather on Tuesday, July 2, at the Apawamis Club in Rye., N.Y., in the 94th Stoddard Trophy Match.

Scoring

Veteran Jay Blumenfeld of Mountain Ridge is serving as captain of the 2019 NJSGA Stoddard Trophy team which seeks its 42nd victory in the triangular match that dates back to 1922. The NJSGA leads the series, 41-24-24 with four ties.

Last year, Westchester attained a 20-19-15 victory over the NJSGA (19) and Long Island (15). The most recent NJSGA victory was in 2017, when the NJSGA won at the Rockaway Hunting Club in Lawrence, N.Y.

The Stoddard Trophy competition is a one-day triangular match, featuring six foursomes (alternate-shot) matches in the morning and 12 singles matches in the afternoon.

In the morning, teams play foursomes matches (alternate shot) against the teams from LIGA and WGA in the same group. Each team can win a maximum of two points (one for each match).  In the afternoon singles matches, a total of 36 points are at stake, with 24 points being the maximum available to any one team (if each of the 12 players swept their two individual matches).

Here’s a look at the members of the NJSGA Stoddard Trophy team:

Jay Blumenfeld, Mountain Ridge: A three-time NJSGA Senior Player of the Year, he reached match play in the 2019 Mid-Amateur and was T-15 at the NJPGA/NJSGA Senior Open.

Tom Collins, Essex County: Reached the final of the 2019 Four-Ball Championship with partner Tom Guy of Eligo Club. Advanced to the Round of 16 at 2019 Mid-Amateur. Medalist at 2019 Amateur Championship qualifier at Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club.

Ryan Davis, New Jersey National: Won the 2018 Met Amateur Championship. Reached 2019 U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier at Century and Old Oaks.

Sam Goldenring, Brooklake: Won the 2019 NCAA Division 3 championship as a golfer for Williams College. T-4 at 2019 Ike Championship. T-17 at 2018 Amateur Championship.

Chris Gotterup, Rumson: Third in 2018 Amateur Championship. T-15 at 2018 NJSGA Open. At Rutgers University, named 2019 second team All-Big Ten Conference.

Thomas Guy, Eligo Club: Reached final of 2019 Four-Ball Championship with partner Tom Collins.  Medalist at 2019 Mid-Amateur qualifying at Copper Hill.

Danny Harcourt, Shackamaxon: Medalist at 2019 Open qualifying at Essex Fells. Reached semifinals of Golf Association of Philadelphia Philly Amateur. Named Division 3 All-America for Gettysburg College.

Tom Hyland, Little Mill: Low amateur and T-6 overall at NJPGA/NJSGA Senior Open Championship at Metedeconk National Golf Club.

Thomas LaMorte, Knickerbocker: Runner-up at 2019 Ike Championship. NJSGA 2018 Player of the Year. T-4 2018 Amateur Championship; T-1 low amateur and T-3 overall at 2018 Open Championship.

Chester Patterson, NJSGA E-Club: Reached quarterfinals of 2019 Mid-Amateur. Reached semifinals of 2018 Mid-Amateur.

Jack Skirkanich, Rumson: Semi-finalist at 2019 Mid-Amateur Championship at Crestmont Country Club.

Troy Vannucci, Little Mill: Reached semifinals of U.S. Four-Ball Championship with partner Vince Kwon. T-1 low amateur and T-3 overall at 2018 Open Championship.
