Varnas Captures Women's Event

COLTS NECK, N.J. On a day that finally felt like summer, 53 women golfers gathered at Colts Neck Golf Club for the 6th Women’s Public Links Championship. In the single round stroke play event, Lauren Varnas of Pinch Brook G.C. bested the field by three strokes to win her first major State title. With a one-under par round of 70 on the 4,950 yard Colts Neck course, Varnas won over Karen Bouloucon of Crystal Springs and Hanna Ku of Neshanic Valley, who each shot two-over par 73.

In the net division, Cheryl Williams from the Women’s Golf Association of NJ shot four-under par 67 to win over Margaret Shung of Hominy Hill and Anna Turner of the WGA.
Varnas, a 19 year-old resident of Chatham who just completed her freshman year playing golf for the University of Maryland, was runner-up in this same event last year. A former All-State selection when she played for Oak Knoll School, Varnas is planning on a competitive summer of golf. She will be in the field at the NJSGA Women’s Amateur Championship at Neshanic Valley in late July.
