Volunteer With The Njsga!

The New Jersey State Golf Association is seeking new volunteers, both men and women, to serve on its Tournament Committee. Volunteering with the NJSGA Tournament Committee presents a great opportunity to get involved with the administration of twenty-three annual state championship competitions in a variety of capacities. The NJSGA relies on the dedication, knowledge and good will of our team of volunteers to conduct our annual championship schedule.

Who is eligible to volunteer?

NJSGA Members. A NJSGA member is someone who maintains a handicap through a NJSGA member club or course.

What experience is required?

In general, all that is needed is a strong interest in golf and the desire to “give back” to the game. A volunteer does NOT need extensive Rules of Golf knowledge, but is asked to attend one of the NJSGA’s two preseason Rules Seminars along with the NJSGA Tournament Committee Workshop (details below).

What are some other important considerations?

A prospective volunteer must:

- Complete the volunteer application by clicking here.

- Have means of reliable transportation.

- Be willing to volunteer at least 3 times (or more, if desired) during the season.

- Have a willingness to improve their knowledge of the Rules of Golf and abide by NJSGA policies and procedures.

- An outgoing, cooperative, and team-oriented attitude.

What training is provided by the NJSGA?

The NJSGA asks that all new Committee members attend one of our annual Pre-Season Rules Seminars. The two dates to choose from are Thursday, April 4, at Spring Lake Golf Club in Spring Lake Heights; the second is Wednesday, May 1, at the NJSGA Headquarters at Galloping Hill Golf Course in Kenilworth. Each seminar will be held from 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. on those dates and the fee is $35, which includes breakfast, lunch, and all materials. You may register by downloading the registration form by clicking here, or call the NJSGA office at 908-241-GOLF to sign up by credit card.

Also, the NJSGA will conduct its annual Tournament Committee Workshop which will be held on Wednesday, May 1, from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the NJSGA Headquarters at Galloping Hill Golf Course in Kenilworth. The workshop focuses on the various roles of our committee, as well as best practices and tips for officiating. New committee members are REQUIRED to attend this function. (If a committee member has a conflict with this date, arrangements may be made to meet at another time.) In addition, on-site training is provided at the new volunteer’s first few tournaments where they will ‘ride along’ with veteran NJSGA Officials.

What does a volunteer receive from the NJSGA?

The NJSGA provides Committee members with an official NJSGA button-down dress shirt, golf shirt, hat, tie, pocket badge, name tag, Rules of Golf book and our Tournament Committee handbook, which reviews assignments, procedures, and a ‘how-to’ guide in making rulings and dealing with on-course situations. Committee members are provided with a light breakfast and lunch on days when they are present to officiate. Volunteers will also find that the most rewarding aspect of serving on the NJSGA Tournament Committee is the sense of camaraderie among its members. Everyone on the Committee shares an interest in the game of golf and a great desire to serve the game.

Interested prospective volunteers are encouraged to call the NJSGA at 908-241-GOLF if they have any questions or require further information.
